The latest trend in robotics seems to be the 'tactical thrown robot' - small robots tossed into a situation used to recon an area. The US Navy is working on a new platform for hunting pirates - 'The Ghost'. The jet powered shallow water craft is intended to speed along using 'super cavitation' to reduce the drag of it's pontoon hulls.
