Bad aim...
If you weren't a particularly good shot, this might work for you. It's the M65 Nuclear Rifle. Developed during the cold war, it's the smallest of the field launched nuclear weapons. One of the weapon's large drawbacks: the projectile didn't clear a safe area for the person launching it, making it rather unpopular.
